Hey everyone! 🌎✨ You’ve seen our scores, our radar graphs, and our analyses. But you might be wondering, “How exactly do you come up with these numbers?” Today, I’m pulling back the curtain and revealing the methodology behind our Wise Compass scores.
Our Mission: Empowering Informed Choices
Our goal is simple: to help you make informed choices that align with your values. We believe that your economic decisions have the power to drive positive change. 🌱 That’s why we created a scoring system to evaluate brands on their socio-environmental impact.
The Seven Pillars of Sustainability
Our methodology is built on seven key categories, covering a brand’s entire lifecycle and impact:
- Raw Materials: ♻️ Where do they come from? Are they sustainable?
- Production: 🏭 How are products made? What are the working conditions?
- Transportation and Distribution: 🚚 What’s the environmental impact of getting products to you?
- Use and Maintenance: 🛠️ How durable are the products? Can they be repaired?
- End of Life: ♻️ Can products be recycled or composted?
- Social Aspects: 🤝 How does the brand treat its workers and communities?
- Transparency and Traceability: 🔍 How open is the brand about its practices?
From Research to Scores: Our Process
For each category, we conduct thorough research, gathering information from:
- Brand sustainability reports 📄
- Independent certifications and labels ✅
- News articles and investigative reports 📰
- NGO and advocacy group data 📣
We then evaluate the brand’s performance in each subcategory and assign a percentage score. These scores are then averaged to give an overall percentage for each of the seven main categories. Finally, we convert the percentages into a 0-5 scale for easier understanding and visualization.
Important Disclaimers: We’re Not Perfect!
It’s crucial to understand that our scores are not absolute. We are not auditors, and we don’t have access to every piece of information. Our analysis is based on publicly available data, which may not always be complete or accurate.
Here’s what you should keep in mind:
- Information Gaps: Some brands are more transparent than others. This can lead to incomplete data and potentially less accurate scores.
- Subjectivity: 💭 Evaluating socio-environmental impact involves some degree of subjectivity. We do our best to be objective, but our scores are ultimately our interpretation of the available information.
- Dynamic Landscape: 🌎 The world of sustainability is constantly evolving. Brands’ practices can change, and new information can emerge. Our scores reflect a snapshot in time.
Our Goal: Sparking Conversation
Our aim is not to provide definitive answers but to spark conversation and encourage you to think critically about your purchasing decisions. We hope our scores serve as a starting point for your own research and help you make choices that align with your values.
